No.7: Seattle Incident

Suspicious notebook” cornered Nikken

Here is an old notebook. There is no indication of dignity nor big hearted nature in the handwriting. We can imagine the personality of the notebook's owner.

This notebook is the evidence submitted to the Tokyo District Court. It belongs to Nikken. The Seattle incident as we know it, Nikken's attorney submitted this exhibit as their last resort to prove his innocence but resulted in digging their own graves.

seattleThe incident was simple. In March 1963, Nikken visited Seattle for his first overseas Gohonzon conferral ceremony and involved himself with a prostitute in the night. (Nikken was the study department chief at the time). Ms. Hiroe Clow, an SGI member mediated between the police and Nikken and the incident was not made public. Ms. Clow kept it to herself but when she realized the Nikken sect's unjustifiable conducts against theSoka Gakkai, she broke her silence and made the incident public. Nikken called Ms. Clow a liar and prosecuted SGI in a libel suit.

Nikken's testimony is not stable. In one of his testimonies he said “I did not go out of the hotel at all,” and later changed to “I took a walk by myself and had a drink before returning to my hotel room.” Another testimony “I never gave Ms. Clow a gift”, was also a lie.

memoIn addition to all of this, he submitted this notebook. At the upper right hand corner it says “Let's go to sleep, it's 1pm.” Nikken claims that this is about the evening in question. “1PM” is a mistake of “1AM” and Nikken asserted that a trouble with a prostitute was not possible as he went to sleep at 1AM on that day. However, what is puzzling is who on earth would write in his notebook “let's sleep” right before he actually goes to sleep!

In addition, according to the two handwriting analysts in the United States, “1pm” was added at a later date. The ink for “1pm” and the rest of the page has a high probability of divergence.
